"The Patriot volley was far more
lethal than that of the British; perhaps for several reasons. More
muskets-possibly many more, might have fired, for even those left on the
hillside seem to have blazed away. Then too, the marksmanship may have
been better, for this was a point on which the farmers prided
themselves, and the British rather conceded it. Finally, the target was
more concentrated: a huddled mass of Redcoats crowded into a narrow
lane."

What is it that excites us about the
story of Lexington and Concord? For one thing, it offers a living,
vivid adventure tale of absorbing human interest. The aspects of
startling alarm, of violent emotion, of strenuous action, of
critical decision, and of grave emergency converted the entire route
form Boston to Concord and back into a drama that can hardly be
excelled
Again, here is a story of heroism. In
our modern, cynical outlook, we might ask mockingly, "whatever that
means?" These farmers had no need to enquire for a meaning. To them,
heroism was not a pretense, not a boast, not a pose. It was an
elementary fact. Their deeds verified it in term that were simple
enough. It meant to serve, to suffer, and to die; and all this, they
did.
So too, for the British. Training had
given them discipline, and character gave them determination; but
heroism demanded more. Under desperate trials here, they exhibited
superb fortitude and heroic endurance - only men of the sturdiest
fiber and steadiest courage could have conducted such a retreat as
they carried out.
Finally, the story is one of
patriotism, in a sense that surpasses any current definition;
in fact, when we read of what these people sacrificed, what they
dared, and what they accomplished, we must ask ourselves whether we
know, today, the true significance of the word. It was not simply
the patriotism of the individuals, nor of families, but of
communities at large, of the people as a whole. Let us acknowledge
the fact: there is nothing in our generation to compare with this.
These were, and they remain, the real PATRIOTS.
